The San Marco Hotel is ideal for budget travellers – it was fairly basic but clean and comfortable with decent rooms, a rooftop pool and very helpful staff. Breakfast was included, which was a buffet style affair with hot and cold dishes (changing on a daily basis), lunch was on the same lines, dinner a la carte. 24 hour room service, free shuttles to the beach and to local shopping centres on a daily basis. Conveniently situated in the heart of bustling, cosmopolitan Deira, close to the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and fish markets the San Marco was well placed for access to most parts of the city, although getting a taxi during changeover time (6-8pm) was very difficult. Traffic also very heavy in that area (and other parts of the city) so it was fortunate taxi rates are cheap! The hotel could have done with a bar in my opinion (so remember to bring in some duty free) but other than that it was perfect for my needs. Also as a note, Deira is the old part of Dubai, a Muslim country and noted for the presence of prostitution, so ladies (and gents) should be respectful enough to dress modestly (take note hotpant clad Russian blondes!) and to behave appropriately.

Jobs in Dubai
April 29, 2008 by aim168realestateDubai, fueled by its oil industry, is growing faster than any other city in the world. Most available jobs are to be found in that sector and in fact, about 80% of Dubai’s population is foreign oil workers. Jobs, however, can also be found in the booming construction industry and other sectors. The safest option for a foreign worker would be to secure a job before actually going to Dubai . This can be done through the help of countrymen who already work in the city or through employment agencies. Agencies based in major cities such as Paris usually supply managerial level employees while manual workers are recruited from agencies based in their own countries. Make sure that you tap only registered and reputable recruitment agencies. Foreigners recruited for Dubai jobs are expected to stay only until the end of their work contracts, in contrast to other countries that allow or even encourage foreign workers to become permanent residents or citizens. Don’t pin your hopes on going straight to Dubai and getting temporary or casual work. Asian foreign workers have already cornered that market. Also, unemployment is going up in Arab countries and Dubai companies are being encouraged to hire more local people, especially new graduates.
Dubai’s real estate
April 29, 2008 by aim168realestateAs part of its monthly networking event, Dubai’s real estate professional association, today hosted a seminar to discuss Dubai commercial property market and the relationship between developers, occupiers and investors. With the emergence of Dubai as a regional and global trading hub attracting international tenants, the need for commercial space has become great, whether it is offices, showrooms, warehouses or any type of commercial property. Changes in the legislative framework, with the introduction of the new property law, has also enabled more investors to have access to this market through either direct or indirect investment vehicles. There is much debate, however, about the supply vs the demand characteristic of Dubai office market, at times, it is widely reported that Dubai has zero percent occupancy in this prime office sector.
